What do Jill Kargman of the Bravo show Odd Mom Out and I have in common?
We have both been guests on the podcast, Life’s Accessories!
And, wow, I miss Jill’s show!
Guests on Life’s Accessories, hosted by Rachel Levy Lesser and Stephanie Goldstein, talk about a favorite accessory and why it’s meaningful. Jill chose her Chanel bag; Joanna Rakoff, author of My Salinger Year, chose a special dress; I chose my newest tennis racket, the one that gives me less arm pain.
I also talked about getting back into tennis after a 25-year hiatus because I was jealous when my friends said they were playing. And now tennis is one of my favorite activities. Jealousy isn’t always a bad thing. I also love that playing tennis makes me think of my dad, who died one year ago.
And yes, I also discussed my college essay, which involved why I quit tennis for 2.5 decades, the big mistake of becoming a pom pom girl instead (I’m in that picture above), and why I should have listened to my mom. It was a fun romp into the early-to-mid 90s with Stephanie and Rachel.
The Occasional Book Club You Didn’t Know You Needed
Do you ever want to discuss a great book with interesting people but not commit to a book club for the rest of your life?
The Dear Nina Book Club is open to everyone from everywhere. Each book is a stand alone session. And who knows, maybe you WILL connect with someone new.
Come to one, some, or all!
FIRST ONE: Sunday, February 5th, 2023 at 7:00PM, CST.
WHERE: We will meet on Zoom.
THE BOOK: Truth & Beauty by Ann Patchett. It’s SO good. And it’s short! You have plenty of time to get it read (or re-read).
I hope to do 4-6 meetings in 2023, and I will put the next one up 6-8 weeks before the event.
I can’t wait to talk about literature and friendship LIVE with some of you! And it will be great for you to meet each other.

Quick TV and Book Chat
I’m working on my big 2022 TV and book list for the next editions of my newsletter, but for now I will say that I finished the memoir Normal Family by Chrysta Bilton and it was excellent.
I watched White Lotus and while parts of it were frustrating, that was also part of the fun of it. And I’m really liking Fleishman in Trouble.
Thoughtful Gifts for Friends
Listeners from my Facebook group-–Dear Nina: The Group–- helped me create a mini-episode of Dear Nina about giving thoughtful gifts to friends. You will get some creative ideas in this quick 10-minute episode.
I also briefly discussed Anna Goldfarb’s recent Atlantic article, “Gift-Giving is About the Buyer, Not the Receiver.” Anna was a guest on episode 35 of Dear Nina.
Thanks for reading, listening, and being part of this community who cares about friendship.
